A technological tool to improve teaching and learning of hypothesis testing from the view of didactic suitability criteria

Abstract

After completing two data analysis courses, a study was carried out to evaluate difficulties and errors in relation to understanding the hypothesis testing in a sample of 224 students of the Psychology degree at the University of Huelva, for which an open problem with two questions was presented. Part of the Ontosemiotic Approach was used, together with the semiotic function theory, to analyze difficulties and errors found in the meanings; in addition to a previous investigation that is reviewed. Difficulties related to discrimination between error types, relationship between rejection and acceptance regions, level of significance, p-value and power, along with multiple semiotic conflicts, were observed. Using this information generated from the sample and supported by the didactic suitability criteria, a tool was presented for teaching and learning the calculation of probabilities for this level of students, since it is essential knowledge for hypothesis testing. It was concluded by discussing this technological tool that would allow the assessment of the teaching and learning of the statistical object, hypothesis tests, using the new ways of teaching mathematics through the use of available digital technology and which, in this case, is also free.
